Last night I went and saw Guns N Roses. It was way better than I expected it to be. Why did we see a group of 50+ ‘80s rockers who, arguably, had one great album and a handful of other hits? Well, Appetite for Destruction was released when I was 12. Formative years there, but I never got to see them live. They were HUGE and the album has some pretty great songs on it. The legend of the personalities, the antics, the years and years of animosity between bandmates makes one wonder what would be on display. There was a part of me that wondered if it would be a train wreck. Part of me hoped it would be. Finally, there was the thought that maybe, just maybe, it would be awesome. Shockingly, it was.

What was so great about the show? Most importantly, the band sounded great. They whistled through 2 hours and 25 minutes straight of mostly hits. No big breaks, not a lot of talking, just song after song. Relentless. They only dived into Chinese Democracy a couple of times. Everything else they played was recognizable. The songs you would want to hear. And the hearing was good.

Axl’s voice was strong and he had no problem hitting the high notes and holding them long. Hell, he even looked like he was having fun. Slash is just a machine. Really, the dude is amazing. Duff and the rest of the band provided a strong backbone. There was a moment, three or four songs in, where I found myself in amazement that I was actually seeing Guns N Roses. Something that nobody thought would happen again. The fact that there were so solid made it even more incredible.

They also didn’t shy away from all the glitz and glamour of stadium rock. Bright lights, huge stage, big screens and a good bit of pyro. Loud, garish and fun. What more does a growing boy need?

Kinja'd!!!

So, if you want to see the impossible. If you want to see a good rock show. Then you should give it a chance add to see what was one of the biggest bands in the world. You will have a good time.

I've never been a huge GnR fan, but I would love to see Slash play.

Yeah, the guy has talent. We have a good documentary on our planes’ IFE about him. I stumbled across it Tuesday afternoon while flying home from MSP. He’s just a natural. He also comes across as a very intelligent, nice guy. He has a ton of operrunities to show his talent during the show.

Yeah, not surprising. I forget who, but one of Slash’s friends was on the Nerdist podcast and let out that he is a huge dinosaur geek. They were texting him Dino questions throughout the interview.

Slash should be cast on Top Gear. He was great when he was on there.

GnR was my first ever concert back in 2005 for their Chinese Democracy tour. It was a fantastic show and they played almost only hit songs. Slash wasn’t involved then but Sebastian Bach was the supporting act and he he did a couple songs with Axl. I left very impressed. I would have loved to have seen them again this year but I didn’t get a ticket in time, might not get another chance.

Back in 1988 some friends invited me to go see a GNR concert at a small local venue as part of the Appetite for Destruction tour, before they really hit the big-time. I turned them down. It is one of my big regrets in life. At the time I was burned out on hair bands so I skipped it.
